Timber
Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is active in the Timber & Paper Industry with the transportation of pulpwood from the forests of Mpumalanga, Kwa Zulu Natal and Eastern Cape to the Paper / Pulp mills situated in Geduld, Ngodwana, Richardsbay, Mandini and Umkomaas.
Pulpwood is also transported to the timber chipping plants in Richardsbay and Durban from where the wood chips are exports to the Far East.
Paper pulp is also transported to various markets as far as the Western Cape. Mining timber is transported from the Mpumalanga area to various mines in the interior.
The two main players in the Timber & Paper market are Mondi and Sappi. Smaller players are TWK, NCT and Bedrock.
TFR make use of specialized build timber wagons (ST -type) to transport timber logs. The wagons are designed with only upright stanchions on the side ease the loading and off-loading process.
